I asked Chat GPT to write my media pitch-here's what happened.
Here's what's new in a week of PR.
There’s no getting away from AI these day, even if journalists actually really want to.
Last week, Press Gazette reported of a new AI tool that was bombarding journalists was writing its own press releases and bomboarding journalists with pitches. It even comes up with a ‘relentless follow up button’ which will keep following up with journalists for you.
I’d be lying if I said this didn’t sound a little bit tempting! However, so many journalists are cautious about AI right now (with recent stories showing PRs using AI to make up experts that don’t actually exist!), that I have the opposite approach and don’t use it for anything.
A lot of people ask me if they can use AI to write their pitches, so I put it to the test. And here’s what I noticed.
The way Chat GPT structures pitches is completely different to how I would structure one-they’re often too long, use lots of subheadings and take too long to get to the point.
Chat GPT often doesn’t get headlines right. It does better when it’s expert articles, but often uses vague titles for lived experiences.
The biggest issue: I asked Chat GPT to personalise the pitch by referencing a previous article a journalist had written, but the article they referenced didn’t actually exist.
Now I’m sure there are ways to make this better-I’m pretty new to AI (and despite the fact I love to use a dash, I promise that’s just my love of dashes and not chat GPT!) and there may be ways to train it. But for now, I’m just not convinced it can replicate pitches.
